Family Picnic and Park Dedication!

SLVHFH Volunteer of the Month

This month, we would like to highlight and honor Kayla Bumgarner for volunteering and her dedication to Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity. Kayla, a recent high school graduate, has found the time to volunteer over 192 hours at the Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Kayla is an essential part of the ReStore Volunteer Staff. When volunteering, she works with Erin, our cashier, to greet customers and manage the cash registers.  Her joyful attitude welcomes customers to the ReStore. One of Kayla’s favorite parts of volunteering at the ReStore has been working alongside the other volunteers. She says, “The people here are really fun and great to be around.” We are happy that Kayla enjoys her time here!

Kayla is very familiar with the Habitat for Humanity community. Kayla’s grandmother, Margaret, has worked for SLVHFH for 6 years before retiring this past October.  With her grandmother’s lead, Kayla has learned about her community and helped others through Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity.

We greatly appreciate Kayla’s dedication to the SLVHFH ReStore.  Thank you Kayla for all that you do!

SLV Habitat for Humanity Golf Tournament 2011

It was a beautiful day at Jeremy Golf and Country Club where Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity hosted our 4th Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, June 13, 2011. With only a few more divots added to the course and a “Mulligan” or two, the day was an overwhelming success.

This year 82 golfers participated in an 18-hole, 4-man scramble. Both beginners and experienced golfers came out to support our mission. One golfer really enjoyed his experience, “We had a great day of golf and we really enjoyed learning more about Habitat from the facts posted throughout the course,” he said.

Certain holes on the course had an extra bit of competition where golfers vied for the tournament’s closest to the pin and longest drive contests which earned them a prize at the end of the day. An opportunity drawing featuring special items such as an iPad, a snowboard and a set of Taylormade Burner 2.0 irons and a TaylorMade R-11 driver was a popular part of the day.   Golfers generously donated money to put their name into the drawings.

Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity’s goal is to eliminate poverty housing and help low to middle income families that have been priced out of the housing market finally have home of their own. Proceeds from this event will go towards building more homes in the Salt Lake Valley and Tooele Valleys.

We would like to a say a special thank you to all of our sponsors. Without them this day wouldn’t have been possible.

Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity Hosts 5th Women Build

April 28, 2011

In the days leading up to Mother’s Day construction crews of female volunteers will raise their hammers at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the country in recognition of National Women Build Week, April 30 through May 8. Lowe’s and Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity are hosting local women to volunteer for a day at South Salt Lake Habitat construction site during this nine-day event. Construction or home improvement experience is not necessary.

We will be building at 53 and 47 West Dewar Grove Lane in South Salt Lake. Several corporate and community organizations of women are coming together to stand for the empowerment of women in construction and adequate housing needs.

The Mother’s Day timeframe was selected for its significance to many volunteers. Families with children make up a staggering number of those in need of adequate housing. More than 12 million children – one in six – live in poverty housing in the United States alone.

To date, female volunteers have built more than 1,800 Habitat houses nationwide during National Women Build Week. Locally, Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity has built 79 homes and is hosting its 5th Women Build Week in partnership with Lowe’s.

National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day in the effort to help eliminate poverty housing. The event has drawn more than 20,000 female volunteers from all 50 states.

For further information, please contact Lynda Gossett at lynda@habitatsaltlake.com.

No matter the location of the build site, the religion, gender or ethnicity of the homeowners or volunteers, there is a sense of authentic community that links Habitat partners. It’s exactly this kind of shared commitment that has sustained Habitat for three decades, and, similarly, it will be a renewed commitment that’s necessary to meet the challenges ahead. I don’t have to remind you that the need for decent housing is immense. Our tenacity is equally vast.
